Mayan Archaelogical Site

The Mayan civilization dominated much of Mesoamerica up until the 9th or 10th centuries AD. Then the Mayans abandoned their cities which disappeared under jungle growth. These cities are now being rediscovered and excavated in an attempt to learn how the Mayan culture functioned. One such city is Chacchoben, now partially excavated.

Chacchoben means “red corn”.
