The Cliffs in Princeville

February 2009

We stayed at a resort in Princeville called the Cliffs. Princeville is on the north (rainy) side of the island of Kauai’i. The Cliffs resort is located on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. There is no useable beach at the Cliffs. However, the cliff itself is a good place for watching Humpback whales during the winter. Since Princeville is a short distance west of the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge, the cliff is also a good place for bird watching. We mainly saw Laysan Albatrosses and Frigate birds. Nene geese were also present on the property.

Nenes - the Hawai'ian state bird

Nenes are large geese native to Hawai'i. Endangered, they are now being introduced to the island of Kauai'i. Nenes look and act a good deal like Canadian geese, but they are tamer and their markings are different. Somewhere, I read that Nenes don't fly. Not true. I did see them fly.

Kym

Renting a car on Kaua'i was problematic. We had to settle for a Jeep Wrangler that had been through some previous hard times. Since the first three characters of her license plate were KYM, we called her Kym.

Bill liked Kym a lot.
