A harbinger of spring in this part of the world – the managers of nature preserves commission controlled burns of the prairies. Fire kills invasive plants and encourages native plants to sprout. In some cases the acreage involved is small; however, at the Morton Arboretum there are extensive prairies and savannas that need this type of management. The fires at the arb can be quite large and impressive.
April fires bring May flowers.
The people in the yellow fire suits are controlling the burn.
They carry bags of water in their back packs. They use the water to put out small
inappropriate fires.
