Erice, on the east side of the island of Sicily, probably maintained its medieval character because it was difficult to attack and not strategic. Erice is at the top of a very rugged mountain. Until the mid-20th century, the only access was by mule. Today, you can visit Erice via a narrow mountain road or by cable car. Tour buses take intrepid tourists to Erice which is how we got there.
They say Erice gets very crowded in the summer. Since we visited during the offseason, we pretty much had Erice to ourselves. This was good for photography.
