Hoover Dam and Lake Mead are between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. So our helicopter flew over the dam and the lake allowing me to take some pictures. Hoover Dam dams the Colorado River, providing water and electricity to Nevada and Arizona. Hoover Dam formed Lake Mead by blocking water that would otherwise flow downstream.
Hoover Dam was once the tallest dam in the world. Today it holds the 18th spot for tall dams.
Notice on the following pictures how a white strip boarders Lake Mead. This strip shows how much the lake has receeded in the las few years. The southwest USA is currently suffering from a severe drought. The water level dropped due to useage exceeding the water renewal from rain and snowpack.
