Helsinki, Finland

June 19, 2012

Helsinki is a modern, thriving town with a variety of successful industries, including an abundance of hi-tech companies. It looks like a place that a person from the US Midwest could live. Parts of the waterfront remind me of areas of the Milwaukee lake front.

However, the most unusual event from the entire Northern European Adventure occurred while visiting Helsinki: One of our scenic stops included the opportunity to use washroom facilities. Moving slowly due to my gimpy foot, I followed the excursion guide and other tourists in our group to a near-by building. They left me behind. The women’s washrooms were down a flight of stairs which I slowly negotiated. Moving by myself, I heard water dripping; I heard water trickling; I heard unfriendly animal noises. Did the other women come this way? Courage in hand, I opened the door to the washroom which turned out to be a large, clean, well-appointed facility. Later, while I was washing my hands, Joan, another person from our group, started exploring the room and found the speaker that was producing the unusual sounds. When asked, the excursion guide gave a half giggle and said, “Oh, that’s art.”

Our tour of Helsinki was relatively short and also short on photographic opportunities. So there are not very many scenic Helsinki images on this page.
