Rural buildings dating from the mid-1600s

Vest-Agder Upscale residence for the time. White paint was expensive and difficult to acquire. The backside of this house was not painted.

Vest-Agder Notice how the buildings are all attached and made of wood. The problem was, if one building caught fire, they all did. Many Norwegian towns suffered devestating fires. As a result, from the 1900s on, Norwegians built their town structures of stone or brick with tile roofs.
