Geese and ducks stay around as long as there is open water.
Sandhill Cranes migrate south through northeastern Illinois around Thanksgiving.
These cranes are about 4 feet tall with a 5 to 6 foot wingspan. They make a distinctive
warbling sound, and fly in v formations, much like geese. In interest of full disclosure,
this is a picture of a caged crane.
