Funchal Madeira, a Portuguese island

Funchal, on the island of Madeira, is part of Portugal. It is located at 32 degrees N and 17 degrees W, 520 km off the coast of Africa. Fun fact: The name, Funchal, is derived from the word for “fennel”.

Funchal Waterfront

Our stay was short; we docked at noon and sailed for Lisbon at 10 p.m. Rather than take an excursion, Bill and I explored the waterfront.

Madeira Bill and a statue of Cristiano Ronaldo. Cristiano is a native of Funchal and is considered to be the best soccer player in the world.
