Bill viewing an "old" lava flow from 1969-1972 along the Chain of Craters
road. Vegetation is taking over, but the lava flow is still mostly rocks.
Hazard!! The sign suggests that "Volcanic fumes are hazardous to your
health and can be life-threatening." No kidding. None-the-less,
we continued walking along the road.
Near the ocean a old lava flow blocked the Chain of Craters road. We walked
from here across the lava field to an overlook.
Where we saw the results of hot lava flowing into the ocean - steam! The lava
flow was about a mile from the overlook. Since the footing was treacherous
and it was raining, we choose to not proceed closer to the lava.
