Iceland - Langjokull

July 29, 2010

Langjokull - Long Glacier - is the second largest glacier in Iceland.

The glacier is far from being just a big ice cube. It has water running off in streams that etch gullies throughout the glacier. It is up to 600 meters thick in the middle, and there are cracks in it that are wide enough to see hundreds of feet down. Some of the ice is blue. That is the oldest ice, so compacted that it squeezed out all the oxygen.

When we began, I was worried that the vehicle, the Ice Explorer, would tip over into one of the rivers of water, or be caught by cracks that would swallow us. But the truck acted like a long ski, smoothing out the cracks and even ignoring the sides of the ravines where the water flowed. We just went over everything, to our great amazement. We would look over the side and see something that would catch an unwary person on foot, travelling in the fog, and they would never be seen again.
