Goðafoss - Waterfall of the Gods

In the year 1000 the Lawspeaker Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði made Christianity the official religion of Iceland. He then converted to Christianity. After his conversion it is said that upon returning from the Alþingi, Þorgeir threw his statues of the Norse gods into the waterfall. Þorgeir's story is preserved in Ari Þorgilsson's Íslendingabók.

pseudocrater Pseudocrater: Where lava strikes open water and explodes, it forms a pseudo-crater. In this picture what looks like a crater is actually the result of a lava “bubble” that exploded and then collapsed leaving the indentation in the earth.

Dimmuborgir - Dark Castles - a Lava Labryrinth

Dimmuborgir resulted from a massive, collapsed lava tube formed by a lava about 2300 years ago. The lava pooled over a small lake and the water of the marsh started to boil to form lava pillars from drainpipe size up to several meters in diameter.
