Søgne, Norway

June 12, 2012

On June 12, our ship docked in Kristiansand, located near the southern most part of Norway. Kristiansand, the 5th largest municipality in Norway, has a population of about 82,000 people. It is not a large place. While in Kristiansand, we took a 4 hour excursion that included viewing some of the buildings in Kristiansand and touring nearby Søgne.

Søgne Fish, drying in the back of a boat: Dried fish, depending on the species, keeps for a considerable amount of time. Once dried, fish do not need refrigeration or other special handling. As such, it has been a staple in the menus of seafaring people and their trading partners throughout much of history. Today we prefer fresh fish; it tastes better.

Søgne Church

Built in 1640, this is the oldest half timbered church in Norway. The church is known for its elaborately painted interior.

Søgne Seafaring people tended to decorate their chuches with model ships. Also notice the clouds painted on the ceiling.
