St Croix - Scenic Road West

April 1974

These three pages document a first for Cassie, Bill, and me – our vacation to St. Croix in the American Virgin Islands was the first time we had been to the Caribbean; the first time we had ever left the continental United States. We were awed the scenery and the tropical foliage.

Back in the 1970s, photography was Bill's domain. He took all photographs, including those on these St. Croix pages. As a result, he does not appear in any of the St Croix pictures.

No doubt, the island has changed. For example, in 1989 hurricane Hugo destroyed the resort where we stayed, the Cane Bay Plantation. As of this writing, they have yet to build a replacement resort.

The scenic road pictured on the first page was our first experience with a common tropical phenomenon – mountainous islands frequently have a dry, desert side and a wet, rainforest side.

A fashion note: we had rented an open top vehicle. While riding around the island, we used the scarves to protect our hair. The scarves are not a fashion statement.
