The Whim estate was a restored 18th century sugar cane plantation opened to the public as a tourist attraction. At the time we visited, the great house had period furniture and decorations. The windmill was the remains of its former self. Other outbuildings were, for the most part, missing. Even in its incomplete state, we found it facinating. Presumably, a traveller today would find a more complete representation of an 18th century sugar cane plantation.
They used molasses for mortar. It appears to have worked well. The great house had survived a number of hurricanes and was in good shape.
