At Sea

A Change in Plans

Several months age Bill suggested that he would like to take a transoceanic cruise. “Why?” I said. “There is nothing to see but water.” Nonetheless, we signed up for a transatlantic cruise from Miami to Lisbon with stops in Bermuda and in the Azores. Our ship was the Azamara Quest. The Quest is relatively small, serving 694 passengers on 9 passenger decks. Our stateroom was on deck 7.

Our trip from home to Bermuda went as expected. However, after leaving Bermuda we learned that due to high winds we would not stop in the Azores, but would stop instead in Madeira. Madeira is further south and the route to Madeira would avoid the extreme sea conditions. This change also meant an extra day at sea. Below is a graphic of the expected wave heights across the Atlantic Ocean.

Although we were south of the more extreme wave conditions, the ship rolled quite a bit. Good for sleeping; not so good for walking.
