condominium Our condominium was the fourth from the left in the above building. It included the two top floors. The entire building is on pillars which gives water some place to go in the event of a storm surge.

When we were not at the pool or out-and-about we spent our time on the screened-in porch that you can see in the picture. We had a great view of the Gulf of Mexico, and could see birds, dolphins, and humans looking for sea shells. The porch was also a good place to read, eat, and just hang out.

On Sanbel Island, photographers face a great temptation to take many pictures of the wide variety of birds, especially those birds that stand still for a short period of time. I succumbed. The bird in the picture to the left is a Double Crested Cormorant.

Cormorants are common winter birds in South Florida. During the spring and fall, they can also be seen in northeastern Illinois. They swim under water to catch fish. Because they lack oil on their wings, they must spread their wings to dry after fishing.

If they are so common, why take their picture? Well, the behavior of a bird hanging her wings out to dry is a bit unusual and picturesque. Also, she stood still long enough to photograph.
