Akureyri is nicknamed "the Capital of North Iceland." Akureyri is a comfortable, large, modern town with all the comforts. The town has approximately 16,000 inhabitants. It is relatively warm due to its geographical situation and the harbor stays ice-free all year. It even has a year-round outdoor botanical garden. Akureyri has been heated geothermally since the late 1970s. Akureyri has the world's northernmost 18-hole golf course.
